- Not recommended while breastfeeding since small amounts of hormones can get into breast milk and change how much milk is made.
FAQs for medicines
1. Is Harmoni a medication that prevents pregnancy?
Yes. It works as a combination oral contraceptive tablet that stops ovulation and unplanned pregnancy.
Q2. Is Harmoni a good way to cure acne?
Yes. It helps get rid of acne, greasy skin, and hair on the face and body that you don't want because of hormonal imbalance.
Q3: What should I do if I forget to take a tablet?
As soon as you recall, take the tablet you missed. If it's been more than 12 hours, follow the instructions on the pack or use a backup (non-hormonal) birth control method for a week.
Q4. Will it make you gain weight?
Some women may notice little changes in their weight because of hormones, although this is different for each person.
Q5: Is it okay for me to take Harmoni all the time?
In most cases, you take it for 21 days and then get 7 days off from taking pills. Talk to your doctor about using it all the time.
Expert advice
- To keep your hormone levels stable, take the tablet at the same time every day.
- If you are over 35, don't smoke while on hormonal birth control.
- Watch out for warning signals like leg swelling, chest pain, a bad headache, or changes in eyesight. These could mean that you have rare but dangerous adverse effects from the clot.
- For the first seven days of your first pack or if you skipped doses, use a condom instead of hormonal birth control.
- Talk to your doctor before surgery or being stuck in one place for a long time; they may tell you to stop temporarily.
Side effects
- Feeling sick or throwing up
- Headache or migraine
- Swelling or pain in the breasts
- Changes in mood and irritation
- Light bleeding or spotting that happens at random times
- Changes in weight or fluid retention
- Not common, but serious:
- Formation of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
- High blood pressure
- Problems with liver function
- If you get severe stomach discomfort, shortness of breath, chest pain, or vision loss, see a doctor right away.
How It Works
- Stop ovulation (no egg release).
- Make the mucus in the cervix thicker so that sperm can't get in.
- Change the lining of the uterus so that implantation can't happen.
- Lower the activity of androgens (male hormones) to help with acne and hirsutism.
Medicine interaction
- If you are taking any of the following, tell your doctor:
- Antibiotics like Rifampicin and Rifabutin
- Antiepileptics (for example, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, and Carbamazepine)
- Antiretrovirals (HIV medications such as Ritonavir)
- Herbal remedies, particularly St. John's wort.
- Antifungals, such as Griseofulvin
- These can make birth control less effective. Use backup birth control during and for seven days following these treatments.
How to Use
- For 21 days in a row, take one pill every day. After that, don't take any pills for 7 days.
- Start the next pack after the 7-day hiatus, even if you are still bleeding.
- Do not skip doses; take them all at once with water.
- Start on the first day of your menstruation to get immediate protection.
Uses/indications
- Hormonal birth control (to stop pregnancy)
- Acne and greasy skin linked to elevated androgen levels
- Hirsutism is when women grow too much hair.
