How it works
- This medication is made up of two more drugs:
- Piperacillin
- An antibiotic penicillin that works on a wide range of bacteria
- Stops germs from making their cell walls, which kills them.
- Tazobactam
- A substance that inhibits beta-lactamase
- Stops bacterial enzymes from breaking down piperacillin
- They work better together against bacteria that are resistant to treatment, such as gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic species.
How to Use
- Only a healthcare professional may provide it
- Given as an intravenous (IV) injection or infusion
- The dose and length of time depend on how bad the infection is, how well the kidneys are working, and how sick the patient is.
- Finish the whole course of treatment, even if your symptoms become better.
Pregnancy Interaction
- Generally thought to be safe during pregnancy when absolutely necessary
- It is considered minimal risk, but you should only use it with a doctor's permission.
- The benefits must be greater than the hazards.
- Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
Side Effects
- Diarrhea
- Feeling sick or throwing up
- Pain or redness at the injection site
- Headache
- Less common but more serious side effects:
- Allergic reactions include rashes, itching, and swelling.
- Severe diarrhea caused by Clostridioides difficile
- Low potassium levels in the blood
- Changes in blood cell counts
- Problems with how the kidneys or liver work
- If you have trouble breathing, a bad rash, or diarrhea that won't go away, get medical care right away.
Medicine Interaction
- Piperacillin + Tazobactam may not work well with:
- Blood thinners, such warfarin, make bleeding more likely.
- Methotrexate—delayed removal and higher toxicity
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics should not be combined in the same IV line.
- Diuretics: higher chance of an imbalance in electrolytes
- Always tell your doctor about all the vitamins and drugs you are taking.
Expert Advice
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin or beta-lactam.
- You may need to keep an eye on your kidneys while you are being treated.
- Drink plenty fluids until you can't.
- Don't quit treatment early without talking to a doctor first.
- Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea, a rash, or bleeding that doesn't stop.
