Uses / Indications:
Hypothyroidism (all causes: autoimmune, post-surgical, post-radioactive iodine, thyroiditis)
Goiter (simple or multinodular)
Thyroid cancer (as a kind of treatment following surgery)
Replacement therapy after thyroidectomy
TSH suppression test (for diagnosing and monitoring thyroid diseases)
Pregnancy interaction:
Thyronorm (Levothyroxine) is safe and necessary for pregnant women who have hypothyroidism.
Requirements normally go up during pregnancy, thus you need to get regular thyroid testing (TSH, T4) every 4 to 6 weeks.
If you don't treat hypothyroidism, you are more likely to have a miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, a baby who is born too early, a baby who is too small, and brain development problems.
Breastfeeding is safe. Very little amounts get into breast milk and don't hurt the infant.
Expert advice:
Take it every day, on an empty stomach, with water, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
Only drink plain water with it, not tea, coffee, milk, or juice.
Keep Thyronorm and iron/calcium supplements or antacids at least four hours apart.
It is very important to regularly check thyroid function using TSH and Free T4 assays.
Don't stop suddenly without talking to your doctor beforehand.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or want to get pregnant.
Side Effects:
If the dose is right, it is usually well tolerated.
If the dose is too high (overdose), the symptoms are like those of hyperthyroidism:
Heartbeats that are too fast or too slow
Heart palpitations and chest pain
Shaking, worry, and being irritable
Losing weight even though you have a good appetite
Sweating and not being able to handle heat
Restlessness and trouble sleeping
Diarrhea
Not often:
Temporary hair loss, particularly in children at the onset of treatment
Allergic symptoms include a rash, itching, swelling, and trouble breathing.
How to use:
The dose is 125 mcg once a day, although it may be different for each person based on blood tests and how well the treatment works.
Take it in the morning on an empty stomach with a glass of water.
Don't eat or drink anything (except than water) for 30 to 60 minutes.
Do not crumble or chew; just swallow.
Take every day at the same time.
How it works:
Levothyroxine sodium, a man-made form of the thyroid hormone T4 (thyroxine), is in Thyronorm.
The body changes it into T3 (triiodothyronine), which is the active hormone.
Brings hormone levels back to normal, which helps with metabolism, energy, growth, and development.
It helps with symptoms of hypothyroidism include exhaustion, weight gain, not being able to handle the cold, dry skin, and sadness.
Faq for medicine:
Q1. What is the purpose of Thyronorm 125 mcg?
It is used to treat hypothyroidism, goiter, and as hormone replacement following thyroid surgery or when thyroid cancer is suppressed.
Q2. Is it safe to consume when pregnant?
Yes. It is safe and highly recommended. Most of the time, a dose change is needed.
Q3. How long will I have to take it?
Most people with hypothyroidism need treatment for the rest of their lives.
Q4. When will I start to feel better?
In 2 to 4 weeks, you should start to feel better. It may take a few months to get the full benefit.
Q5. Is it possible for me to swap brands?
No. Stick with the same brand because different brands may absorb differently.
Q6. What will happen if I miss a dose?
As soon as you recall, take it. You can omit the missed dose if it's near to your next one. Don't take two doses.
Medicine interaction:
Iron and calcium supplements, antacids, sucralfate, and cholestyramine all make it harder for your body to absorb nutrients.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants raise the risk of bleeding; keep an eye on INR.
Diabetes medications (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas) → may change how well blood sugar is controlled.
Antidepressants (SSRIs, tricyclics) → may change the amount of thyroid hormone you need.
Enzyme inducers including carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, and phenobarbital may speed up the metabolism of levothyroxine, which means you may need a greater dose.
