Uses / Indications:
Phenytoin 125mg Oral Suspension is used in the treatment of seizures and trigeminal neuralgia.
Pregnancy interaction:
Phenytoin 125mg Oral Suspension is unsafe to use during pregnancy.There is positive evidence of human fetal risk, but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk, for example in life-threatening situations. Please consult your doctor.

Phenytoin should be taken at the same time every day to maintain consistent levels in your body. Do not stop using Phenytoin without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. It causes sleepiness or drowsiness. If this happens to you, do not drive or use machinery. Avoid consuming alcohol when taking the Phenytoin, as it may cause excessive sleepiness or drowsiness. It may increase blood sugar levels.Inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines to treat diabetes. Do not start any medicine including herbal or ayurvedic without telling your doctor. As it may significantly change the Phenytoin levels. Inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with kidney or liver problems. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive or breastfeeding.
Side Effects:
Nystagmus (involuntary eye movement), Double vision, Sleepiness, Anemia (low number of red blood cells), Peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of feet and hand), Gingival hyperplasia, Increased hair growth, Osteoporosis.
How to use:
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Phenytoin 125mg Oral Suspension may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How does Phenytoin work? : Phenytoin is used to control seizures (fits) in epilepsy patients and it works by suppressing the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain.|Does Phenytoin cause gingival hyperplasia? : Phenytoin is known to cause gingival hyperplasia (enlarged gums). To avoid this, you must maintain a good dental hygiene (taking proper care of your teeth and gums). Please consult your doctor if you have enlarged gums after taking Phenytoin. |Does Phenytoin cause osteomalacia? : Osteomalacia (softening of the bones) has been associated with long-term (>10 years) use of Phenytoin by patients with chronic epilepsy. There have been reports of bone disorders including osteopenia (reduced protein and mineral content of bone tissue) and osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) and fractures with Phenytoin. Please consult your doctor for further information.|Can I take Phenytoin with aspirin? : Phenytoin can decrease the levels of aspirin by increasing its metabolism (breakdown) and hence decrease its effect. Please consult your doctor before taking the two medicines together.|Can I take Phenytoin with ibuprofen? : Phenytoin can be taken with ibuprofen. No drug-drug interactions have been reported between the two. However, interactions can occur. Increased metabolism of paracetamol can increase the levels of substances that can cause liver damage. Phenytoin belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-epileptic medicines, these medicines are used to treat epilepsy. |Is Phenytoin a controlled substance? : Phenytoin is not a controlled substance under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA). A controlled substance is generally a drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession or use is regulated by a government.|Is Phenytoin dialyzable? : Phenytoin is not dialyzable by a conventional hemodialysis machine but can be dialyzed by a high permeability type of hemodialysis. Please consult your doctor before taking any medicines along with Phenytoin as it may affect the metabolism of the medicines which are metabolized by CYP450 for example Vitamin D.|Is Phenytoin basic or acidic? : Phenytoin is a weakly acidic drug.|Is Phenytoin addictive? : Phenytoin has not been reported to have any addictive potential and it does not show any symptoms of dependence. However, it should be taken for the duration as advised by your doctor.|Does Phenytoin get you high? : Phenytoin does not give you a high. |Does Phenytoin cause hyponatremia? : Phenytoin does not cause hyponatremia (low sodium levels). However, Phenytoin is known to cause hypernatremia (high serum sodium level >145 mmol/L).|Does Phenytoin cause QT prolongation? : Phenytoin is not known to cause QT prolongation (abnormal heart rhythm). However, it can rarely cause abnormal heart rhythms. Please talk to your doctor if you have any abnormal heart rhythm (beats) while taking Phenytoin.|Does Phenytoin affect thyroid? : Thyroid function may get affected while you are taking Phenytoin, especially in children. Thyroid function should be monitored while taking Phenytoin. Please consult your doctor if you have hypothyroidism or a history of hypothyroidism.|Does Phenytoin cause weight gain? : Phenytoin has not been reported to cause weight gain. However, weight loss can occur with longer term use of a higher dose of Phenytoin.
