Description:
Uses / Indications
- Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) as an element of combination therapy
- Extrapulmonary tuberculosis - lymph nodes, bones, joints, etc.
- The first two months of TB therapy are usually the most intense.
- Drug-sensitive TB in adults and children (dose adjusted)
- ⚠️ Pyrazinamide is never given by itself; it is always given with other drugs that fight TB.
How It Works
- Pyrazinamide:
- Gets into cells of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- It turns into pyrazinoic acid inside the bacteria.
- Works best in places with a lot of acid (such inside diseased cells)
- Stops TB bacteria from making energy and working on their membranes.
- When used together, it can shorten the length of TB therapy.
How to Use
- Take exactly as your doctor or the DOTS/TB program tells you to.
- Usually taken once a day with food
- Take the whole tablet with water.
- Take it every day at the same time.
- Don't skip doses, and finish the whole course.
- You may need to have blood tests done on a regular basis while you are getting therapy.

- Must be administered with close medical supervision
- It is a good idea to check your liver function regularly.
