Description:
Uses/indications
- 15 mg of ambroxol hydrochloride in 5 mL
- 50 mg of guaifenesin per 5 mL
- 1.5 mg of terbutaline sulfate per 5 mL
- It is prescribed for:
- A wet (productive) cough with thicker mucus is a sign of acute or chronic bronchitis.
- Respiratory conditions that block the airways or cause bronchospasm (like asthma or COPD) and need mucus to be cleared and bronchodilation to happen.
How It Works
- Ambroxol is a mucolytic, which means it helps eliminate mucus by making it thinner and easier to flow.
- Guaifenesin is an expectorant that makes bronchial secretions thicker and less sticky, making it easier to cough up.
- Terbutaline is a selective β₂-adrenergic agonist (bronchodilator). It relaxes smooth muscle in the airways, makes the bronchial passageways wider, and makes it easier for air to flow through.
- These mechanisms work together to help patients breathe better by lowering bronchospasm, relaxing and removing mucus, and making the airways more open.
How to Use
- As advised by the doctor, give it by mouth using the measuring cup or spoon that came with it.
- When treating asthma or bronchitis, individuals usually take up to 10 mL every 8 hours (or as directed).
- You can take it before or after meals to avoid upsetting your stomach.
- The doctor should tell you how long the therapy should last. Don't quit or go longer than the suggested time without talking to them beforehand.
Side effects
- Some common and serious side effects are
- Headache, feeling dizzy, sick, or throwing up.
- The terbutaline part can cause a faster heart rate (tachycardia), tremors, and palpitations.
- Muscle spasms and shivering.
- Discomfort in the stomach, indigestion.
- Rash, hives, or reactions to hypersensitivity.
- Warning: If you have trouble urinating, severe palpitations, arrhythmias, chest pain, or severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face or lips, trouble breathing), stop taking this medicine and visit a doctor.
Medicines interaction
- The bronchodilator (terbutaline) might not work as well if you take β-blockers at the same time.
- If used with terbutaline, it might cause an electrolyte imbalance, such as low potassium; thus, be careful when giving it to people who are on diuretics.
- Terbutaline may make tachycardia worse, raise blood glucose levels, and make the heart work harder in people with heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes.
- If your liver or kidneys aren't working right, talk to your doctor about changing your dose.
- Using other cough or bronchodilator drugs or mucus-clearing medicines at the same time: be careful to avoid extra effects.
Pregnancy Interaction
- Pregnant women should not use it unless they really need to and their doctor has weighed the risks and benefits.
- Animal research may reveal a possible risk, but there aren't many human studies.
- The terbutaline part can have effects on the heart (mother and fetus); thus, it is very important to keep an eye on it.
- If you are breastfeeding, you should be careful because the medicine can get into breast milk and damage the baby.
FAQ for medicines
Q1. Is it okay to use Ephedrex Plus for a dry cough?
A: No, it's mainly used for wet (productive) coughs that require clearing mucus.
Q2. When should I expect to feel better?
A: Many patients may feel better after a day or two, but they should still finish the full course as directed. People respond in different ways.
Q3: Is it okay to use it with other cough syrups?
A: You shouldn't take more than one cough, expectoration, or bronchodilator medicine at the same time without talking to your doctor first. This could cause further side effects or interactions.
Q4. What happens if I forget a dose?
A: If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but don't take two doses at once.
Q5. While I'm taking this prescription, do I need to change my diet or way of life?
A: Drink plenty of water to help remove mucus. Don't smoke or be around things that make you cough. While using this prescription, keep an eye out for illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, or thyroid problems.
Expert advice
- Get a comprehensive medical history (heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, COPD, diabetes, thyroid problems) before giving or taking Ephedrex Plus.
- If a patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, look into safer options or get advice from a professional.
- Tell patients to use the measuring equipment that comes with the medication to get the right dose. Taking the wrong dose could make the medication less effective or cause more adverse effects.
- Patients should be told to watch for indicators of bad reactions (such as palpitations, tremors, arrhythmia, or a worsening cough or wheeze) and to get medical help right away if they notice any new symptoms.
- Make sure to stress that this medicine helps remove mucus and make it easier to breathe. It is not a replacement for a proper medical checkup of underlying respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, or an infection.
- Give directions for non-drug supportive measures, including breathing in steam, using humidified air, getting enough sleep, drinking fluids, and staying away from things that make you feel bad.
- Make sure you follow the length and dose exactly as given. Don't quit suddenly if your symptoms get better unless you're told to.
