Description:
Uses/indications
- Cefuroxime Axetil 500 mg, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is in the CEFAPRIME-500 Tablet.
It is given to people with bacterial illnesses such as—
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections include sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
- Infections of the ear, nose, and throat include otitis media and sinus infections.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and cystitis.
- Cellulitis, abscess, and wound infection are all skin and soft tissue infections.
- Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bones and joints.
- Infections that happen after surgery.
- It protects against a wide range of microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative.
How It Works
- Cefuroxime works by stopping bacteria from making their cell walls.
- It attaches to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacteria, which stops the production of the peptidoglycan layer that gives cells their strength.
- The bacteria's structure breaks down, killing them. This is called a bactericidal effect.
How to Use
- Take one pill every 12 hours or as your doctor tells you to.
- Always take it after eating to help your body absorb it better and keep your stomach from getting upset.
- Do not chew or crumble; just swallow whole with water.
- Finish the whole course even if your symptoms get better. Stopping early could cause them to come back or become resistant.
- If you forget to take a dose, do it as soon as you remember. If the next dose is coming up soon, don't take it twice.
- Keep it out of the sun and in a cool, dry area.
Pregnancy interaction
- When a doctor prescribes it, it is usually safe to use during pregnancy.
- Animal studies demonstrate no teratogenic consequences; however, usage should occur solely under medical supervision.
- Cefuroxime gets into breast milk in small amounts. It's normally harmless, but it can cause minor diarrhea or thrush in babies who are breastfed.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before you start treatment.
Side effects
- Feeling sick, throwing up, and having stomach discomfort.
- Stools that are loose or diarrheal.
- Headaches and feeling dizzy.
- A little rash on the skin.
- Not as common or serious:
- Itching, swelling, and trouble breathing are all signs of an allergic reaction.
- Severe diarrhea caused by an infection with C. difficile.
- Elevated liver enzymes or jaundice (uncommon).
- Vaginal yeast infection or oral thrush (after using for a long time).
- Get attention right once if you have a rash, swelling, or difficulties breathing.
Drugs interaction
- Antacids / H₂ blockers / PPIs (omeprazole, pantoprazole): decrease absorption — retain ≥ 2-hour interval.
- Oral anticoagulants (like warfarin) may make bleeding more likely, so keep an eye on INR.
- Oral contraceptives: antibiotics may make them less effective, so use an other method of birth control.
- Loop diuretics (furosemide) raise the risk of kidney damage.
- Using gentamicin and amikacin together may make nephrotoxicity more likely.
- Make sure to tell your doctor about all the vitamins, drugs, and herbal supplements you take.
Expert advice
- Take it after meals to help your body absorb it better.
- Don't miss any doses and finish the whole course.
- Stay away from alcohol because it can make adverse effects worse.
- Drink plenty of water during the therapy.
- If you've ever experienced an allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin, let your doctor know.
- If your symptoms last more than a few days, talk to your doctor again.
- Don't take medicine on your own or provide antibiotics to other people.
