How It Works
- Amikacin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria.
- Stops protein synthesis, which kills bacteria directly.
- Strong activity against Gram-negative bacteria like:
- E. coli
- Klebsiella
- Pseudomonas
- Proteus
- Used a lot when other antibiotics don't work.
Medicine Interaction
- Stay away from or use with care:
- Raises the risk of damage to the kidneys and ears:
- Vancomycin
- Cisplatin
- Furosemide and other diuretics
- NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Diclofenac)
- Other aminoglycosides include Gentamicin and Tobramycin.
- Other Interactions:
- muscular relaxants → more muscular weakness
- Anesthetics can make it hard to breathe during surgery.
- Blood pressure drugs make it more likely that your blood pressure will be low.
How to Use
